Review - Mykonos

Edit - Due to RL priorities, the owner has closed Mykonos for the summer

Mykonos was one of the first places I covered when setting up this website. At the time, my review was good, but not stellar. As a result, the owner suggested I come back, as she had made some changes.

I'm glad I did, as it was like going to a completely new place.

In addition to an existing Greek Village, Mykonos has been expanded to include a fantastic underwater hotel, and a new town square with exhibitions and restaurants. Much of the furniture has also been replaced, making it FF and MM, as well as MF friendly.

Overall look and feel

The Mykonos Resort is built on a series of private sims, meaning you get a group tag when you check in or rent a hotel room, with the resort only being accessible for group members.

The centre-piece of the resort is a Greek island style village with shops and blue roofed villas. Attached to the village is a beach, a cliffside spa, a scuba diving area and an underwater restaurant that you reach via a passageway.

The other side of the resort includes a square with a wine-themed restaurant, a flower art exhibit, and two restaurants. You can get from this side of the resort to the village via boat (there are rowing boats available by the rocks), or - something we particularly enjoyed - via a zipwire.

A special mention however should be made for the new underwater hotel and underwater area. Another tunnel leads you to the underwater hotel, which includes a reception, a sitting area, an underwater garden and a cafe.

In terms of design, this part was a real highlight. If anything, it's too hidden and the resort should make much more of this. My guess is that some guests won't even realise it's there (I'd also recommend adding a bar to it, to complete the experience).

Finally, the underwater area, that you can scuba dive in (free gear is provided) is beautifully done.

The rooms

When booking, you are given a choice. You can book a hotel room. These are skyboxes, with an elevator leading down to the underwater hotel. Or you can book a villa in the main village. We did both, starting in a hotel room for two nights and moving to a villa for another two nights.

Mykonos is the first private resort sim to offer this choice, and this is actually quite a big deal.

Most private resorts have a 4pm SLT check-in, which is not so good for those of us who live in Europe, the Middle East or Africa. With one or two exceptions, we've found most resort owners to be amenable to an early check-in, but it's actually much easier if you have an option that allows guests to arrive when they like.

Or - maybe you don't want an RP check-in at all.

Either way, the hotel rooms, which work via casper rental boxes, are for you. You tp into the skyboxes (SLURL is via the website) and you then have 120 seconds to look around and pay. On paying the terminal you receive a group tag giving you access to the resort. There's also a guest book you can click in your room, with a list of amenities (and landmarks).

The hotel rooms are quite large (sitting / dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and a yoga room) and at 1000L a night are comparable in price to the larger suites at hotels like the Rizzi. They are however decorated in a generic modern style (with a few Greek touches here and there).

The villas in the main sim are more authentically Greek looking, if that is what you are after. These start at 900L a day.

The one thing we didn't like so much was the use of ban lines around the villas you are not renting. Ban lines are unsightly, and I question whether in a private sim they are even necessary. In any case, if security is needed, orbs are better, being invisible.

Facilities and amenities

The Mykonos Resort has a huge selection of facilities and amenities. Even after four nights, we didn't have time to see them all.

This includes a number of restaurants, where you can book RP dinner (which we did), a cliffside spa, which is really well done, a statue exhibition in the underwater hotel, a pottery RP shop, a beach, and of course the underwater area, which you can explore via scuba diving gear, which is provided for free.

Many private sims struggle when it comes to trying to pack everything in, with the result that they can look cramped. That's not the case here, where the resort has expanded, since the last time I visited in October.

One thing I will mention here is the use of mesh people. Mykonos has a lot of mesh figures into the public areas, restaurants and bars. This makes a big difference in helping everything look much more alive, especially in a private sim when often there are no other AVs around.

Overall - 4.5 / 5

The animations

The skybox hotel rooms have a Loft & Aria Gianni bed, while the villas have a USDesigns Lerna bed. The latter is one of our favourites, it has a lot of animations, and it is worth mentioning that it is also same sex couple friendly (something Ruckus for example isn't).

Throughout the resort, you then have your usual selection of PG anims. Some of these took adjusting, but no more than is the case elsewhere.

Overall - 4 / 5

Other considerations:

Is the resort adult? Mykonos advertises itself as an adults only resort, this is not somewhere you go for family RP. The rooms and some of the areas have adult anims.

Prices - Room / villa rentals start at 900L a night

Lag - Very little

Privacy - This is a private sim, only guests and staff have access

Overall

We loved our stay here. For what you get, the prices are really reasonable. As mentioned, the new underwater hotel and the surrounding scuba diving areas are beautifully done. The resort itself is vast, and it's worth staying for longer just so you can enjoy everything,

Finally, recognising that many SL guests live in non US timezones, and giving people who don't want an RP checkin another option to book, was a huge plus for us. Overall - Highly recommended.
