Review - Yukon Hotel

Introduction

The latest Drune build from Hera (zee9) is a Blade Runner themed sim, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the original movie.

I love neon-urban environments, and so was happy to see that it includes a replica of the Yukon Hotel, which gave me an excuse to cover this amazing place.

My collaborator and guide for this mini-review was Elizabeth Dovgal, please follow her fantastic Flickr feed. Also, take a look at the Drune Forever Flickr group maintained by Sparklebottom (who you should also follow).

The Yukon Hotel

The Yukon Hotel, which is directly across the street as you emerge from the landing point and subway, is pretty simple. There's a downstairs office, some stairs to the rooms (there is actually only one), and a vending machine in the corridor.

Clearly the place is meant to look a little rough, but otherwise the room is actually pretty well appointed, it includes a Lay Lady Lay (adult) bed, a small dining table, and a bathroom that has a bathtub from Muniick.

Hence you could in theory stay here, but you need to be prepared for people to walk in on you. It's free and in a popular destination, and the second time when I went on my own to get details of the furniture for this post, there were people already there.

The Yukon aside, my favourite part of the Blade Runner experience that Elizabeth showed me is Deckard's apartment, I wish there was an SL Hotel that made a suite like this. Or, it could work well as a lounge / bar design too.

This has a large living room, a kitchen, bathroom and a bedroom. The furniture is mainly adult (the bed is PG), and you could stay here, but as with the Yukon Hotel, people will walk in and out if you do.

As well as the dark, moody decor (which does an excellent job of recreating the feel of the film), what I liked is that creator Hera hasn't chosen furniture from the usual suspects. The bed is from HILTED, while the living room furniture comes from Dictatorshop.

SL needs a space hotel

Second Life has lots of beach resorts (and I see new ones opening all the time), but I really think there's room for a sci-fi and space themed hotel.

Lana Milos, owner of the Rizzi opened up a Rizzi in Space at the end of 2000, but sadly closed it soon after. And I know that Fazzy Constantine has been running a Space Station RP experience that includes rooms.

But there definitely is a gap in the market for somewhere like this, if any creators or builders feel inspired.

Conclusion

Not much to say except that I loved it, and Hera has once again shown what's possible in Second Life. Make sure as well to turn the audio stream on, so you can listen to the soundscape created by kaori (0xlyph).
