SL as pandemic therapy
Both my life and work revolves around travel - air travel specifically. So when the pandemic really hit in March 2020, my life like that of so many other people was turned upside down.
Two personal trips I had planned for that month went out the window. And two thirds of my income vanished in a puff of smoke. From a mental health point of view, it hit me hard.
I realised that one of the worst things about the pandemic is a sense of powerlessness. A loss of control over your own life. So I wanted to do something about it, and not be a spectator.
In RL my job has pivoted to me now doing something related to helping the travel sector deal with the pandemic (get to know me and I will tell you about it).
And after a friend took me to the (now closed) Timor Isles Resort in September 2020, it dawned on me that SL could also act as another form of pandemic therapy.
From March 2020-June 2021, I didn’t go more than five miles from my RL house , but here we can go where we want. Especially as a few places do an astonishingly good job of replicating the look and feel of RL resorts.
What do you like doing in RL, and what do you miss? The chances are that Second Life can go a little bit of the way in filling that gap.
I’m not sure I quite subscribe to the point of view a friend told that “reality is all just electrical impulses anyway.” But at times, especially if the experience is immersive, the feelings and sensations can come pretty damn close.
